IDQCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 4, 2010) – USA Volleyball has announced that it will host four International Development Qualifiers (IDQs), which are tournaments to identify elite beach athletes for entry into select international events and other USAV High Performance Beach Programs.

Teams that finish among the top three in IDQ events will get the opportunity to represent the United States in select NORCECA Beach Circuit and other international events.

“Last year’s two IDQ events were highly successful. With the rapid expansion of the NORCECA tour and the demand for high-level events that meet the needs of developing elite athletes, USAV feels that this is the perfect time to expand the IDQ schedule,”  said Ali Wood Lamberson, USA Volleyball’s Director of Beach Programs.

IDQ events are open to all beach athletes who are not ranked among the top 16 AVP teams (pending an AVP final decision). The AVP will grant dispensation to athletes in good standing individually ranked below a certain mark in order to compete in conflicting FIVB and NORCECA events.

Three IDQs will take place at Marina Green Park, 700 East Shoreline Drive in Long Beach, Calif., with the fourth event being held in Florida at a site to be determined.

The entry fee for each event is $70 per team for current USAV members and $80 per team for non-members. The Molten NORCECA ball will be used. The event format will be full match pool play with a single-elimination playoff.

IDQs are open to all beach athletes. Contracted AVP athletes must confirm eligibility based on rank with the AVP prior to the competition. AVP rank is at the final date of IDQ registration.

All participants must hold a valid U.S. passport and may not be currently registered as a member of another country’s volleyball federation.

To register, go to www.regonline.com/USAVBeach2010.

ECBVB

Rankings are computed as follows:

We use three criteria to compute a player's overall and against all players within their division.

  • Individual scoring… For the 85% of the player's tournaments that are his/her highest finishes, this is simply the average difference of their finish compared to the level of competition they played in their tournaments. In other words how well does this player finish when playing in tournaments. This criteria counts for 65% of a player's ranking calculation.

  • Strength of field… The number displayed here is the result of our proprietary ranking formula that determines a score for all the tournaments played by this individual. Again, simply put, a higher number means they played against stronger players and the closer two players' strength numbers are, the more similar the competitiveness of their tournaments. This criteria counts for 25% of a player's ranking calculation.

  • Strength of finish… This table displays the finishes for the player. Finishes count 10% in the ranking computation and are weighted in accordance with the number of players competed against or, in other words, the size of the field.

Special note : We have made a conscious effort to rely more on scoring than on how big the tournaments were that a competitor played in. Selected national tournaments still play an important role in determining our rankings, but our system also lets any tournament count. We believe this will make for a more inclusive approach and will bring recognition to more players.

VanZ

With AVP points on the line, teams with East Coast roots took home titles at the Oct. 17-18 AVPNext/Wilson National Championships in Siesta Key, Fla.

Steve Grotowski and Mark Van Zwieten claimed the men's title and Dana Fiume and Shayna Munson won on the women's side. Van Zwieten resides in Pompano Beach, Fla., Munson in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Fiume in Long Beach, N.Y. Grotowski, born in Bath, Fla., further confirmed beach volleyball prowess exists far beyond the AVP's Manhattan Beach birthplace.

Each player from the winning teams gained 60 AVP points, equivalent to a 25th-place finish on the AVP Tour, good for the 2010 season.

Grotowski and Van Zwieten have played in AVP events before, but not as partners. Grotowski has dual United States/Great Britain citizenship and has played in Europe the past three years. One of Great Britain's best players, he looks to qualify for a spot in the 2012 Olympics. Grotowski played in 29 AVP tournaments from 2002-2006, posting a career-best ninth in Atlanta in 2006.

Van Zwieten, whose older brothers Steve and Jim have played on the Tour, has competed in 37 events over the past six seasons. With one top-nine finish each of the past two years and an AVPNext crown, he continues to move up in the rankings.

Fiume and Munson, teaming up to form one of the East Coast's best teams, boast AVP experience as well. They have played in seven events together, with five top-25 finishes. The tandem earned its best AVP finish by taking 13th in Brooklyn in July.

Fiume starred at Syracuse from 1997-2000 and as a senior set nine school records, including all-time kills and blocks.

Munson played at Eastern Michigan, where she led the team in blocks her first year.

In addition to the winners, teams finishing second through seventh earned AVP points. Second place garnered 55 points per player; third, 50; fifth, 45.5; and seventh, 41.

Rogers

Brazil

AVP teams Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers and Jen Kessy and April Ross flew south to Vitoria, Brazil, last month to compete in the annual USA vs. Brazil FIVB pre-season exhibition, Rogers recounted on his blog (players earn the right to participate by winning their respective country’s king/queen of the beach tournament and can then select a partner of their choice for the exhibition).

It was a win-win for the United States as Dalhausser/Rogers defeated Pedro Salgado and Ricardo Santos in two sets and Kessy/Ross did the same to Juliana Silva and Larissa Franca.

The exhibition culminated with a four-on-four coed match, which Brazil won in three tight sets. Final score of the exhibition: 2-1, USA.

Reportedly more than 18 million people watched the four-on-four event on Brazilian network television.

Australia

Volleyball Australia (VA) proudly announced a major sponsorship agreement over the weekend with Queensland-based financial services group Lifestyle Asset Management (LAM) for the Australian Beach Volleyball Championships and National Series, the Hanson Media Group reported.

The tour will kick off with the Lifestyle Asset Management Australian Beach Championships March 11-14, when 32 teams per gender will converge on Sandstorm Beach Club in Brisbane, Queensland.

Olympic gold medalist Natalie Cook is primarily responsible for making LAM a partner with Volleyball Australia, according to VA CEO Joan Perry.

"It is as a result of the relationship built up with our four-time Olympian Natalie Cook, that we have been able to secure Lifestyle Asset Management as our major partner for the Australian Beach Championships and Beach Series,” Perry said. “Nat is synonymous with Beach Volleyball throughout Australia and the world, and will continue to be a major asset to our sport and our brand.”
